GIA Develops Free Gem Guide for Artisanal Miners

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America), working with nonprofit international development organization Pact, have recently launched a pilot study to test a new rough gem guide. The guide was developed specifically to offer basic gemological and market knowledge for artisanal miners in gem-producing regions. GIA Suspends Diamond Sealing Services

Effective immediately, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will suspend diamond sealing services. The Institute is taking this action after recently encountering a small number of GIA sealing packets that had been compromised by third parties after the sealing packets left GIA.  In these instances, GIA determined that the diamonds originally enclosed in the compromised packets had been replaced with HPHT (high-pressure, high-temperature) treated natural diamonds. The substitute treated diamonds superficially matched the GIA report information for the original diamonds, including information on the sealing packet data label. GIA is suspending sealing services in all locations indefinitely, pending an investigation of

Taxman issues warning after jeweller banned from running business

Company directors have been warned to keep detailed financial records after Gary Wright director of a watch and jewellery wholesaler AS Diamonds in Stevenage was banned from acting as a director for six years for failing to explain away irregular payments. Wright treated HMRC 'detrimentally', according to the Insolvency Service, by charging VAT on almost £500,000 worth of sales invoices but not filing any VAT returns or paying any VAT to HMRC. Although Wright did submit accounting records, they were considered 'inadequate' by the Insolvency Service who claimed they were unable to verify the purpose of payments made to himself
