Veteran jewellery industry stalwart Michael Hoare has passed after a long battle with cancer. Michael studied in the mid seventies at Leicester Polytechnic now De Montford University, and achieved a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art. After graduation he started his professional career in the retail business and joined the Co-operative Midcounties where he worked as a Department Store Manager until 1988. As a brief spell as a Training Consultant he joined the British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) as saw a very speedy transition into management, and Executive management level. Funding of up to £18,000 available for craftspeople QEST offers three grants to support makers and conservators at various career stages, strengthening the pipeline of talented craft professionals in the UK. QEST supports contemporary and traditional craft, as well as the exploration of innovative techniques. QEST provides funding for education and training, with Scholarships of up to £18,000, Emerging Maker Grants of up to £10,000, and up to £12,000 towards an apprentice’s salary. A stark warning has been issued for the future of traditional craft skills in the UK, as new research by Heritage Crafts has identified 20 more crafts at risk of vanishing from the UK, in the latest major update of its pioneering project – the Red List of Endangered Crafts – published today. Trustees of the South House Workshop Trust Announce 2025 Scholars

The Trustees of the South House Workshop Trust are delighted to announce ELEVEN fully-funded silversmithing graduate scholarships for 2025. These residential scholarships are being made available to accelerate the professional careers of promising silversmiths. Each scholarship is for a period of one month or two months, learning a variety of silversmithing skills in an intensive residential placement either in Shetland or Sheffield with master silversmiths Rod Kelly, Brett Payne and Chris Perry. The scholarships include the cost of tuition, travel, accommodation and a subsistence bursary. Each one month scholarship has a value of £5250.00. The training will cover in detail:

Shine 2025: The Goldsmiths' Centre champions the UK's Brightest New Talent in Jewellery and Silversmithing Shine 2025, the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s annual showcase of emerging UK jewellery and silversmithing talent, launches on 17 September 2025 with a special pop-up event and runs until 22 December 2025.
