Joanne T's conceptual collection 'Not Your Average Beauty' is a range of facial ornaments inspired by tribal jewellery, with a mission to subvert and raise awareness of the pressures of modern beauty standards. The tone of the work is confrontational: a direct criticism of a modern symptom. It subverts the notion of ‘normalising’ imperfect features through surgery, instead the wire serves as an icon – a frame for the imperfections of the wearer, challenging them to embrace their perceived flaws. The rigidity of the form gives it an unflinching appeal, it does not obscure, nor play tricks with the eyes,

An innovative collaboration, between jeweller Lucie Gledhill and photographer Kasia, has won the attention of this years’ Goldsmiths’ fair expert judge of the Best New Design Award. In addition to providing scholarships and studio space for artists. The curb chain is a feat of craftsmanship, taking three weeks to complete. Resonance - Catherine Martin The Scottish Gallery 2 August - 1 September 2018 The Scottish Gallery welcomes back Catherine Martin for the Edinburgh Art Festival 2018. Designer-goldsmith Catherine Martin was the first ever westerner to graduate in Kumihimo – the ancient Japanese art of braiding. She later developed the Asian art into a painstaking weaving of fine gold wire by hand. The resulting silken jewels are breathtaking in their sensual play of light and form. As a professional musician and singer, Martin allows the fluidity of music to influence her pieces. Each design element flows with finesse from her instinctive
Kinley Jewellery is the brain-child of jeweller Laura Williams. Meeting her at New Desiners, she spoke with us about the unique inspiration for her award-winning 'Grid' collection. The collection's motif is wire pushed through a grid, cut to different lengths to create a ripple effect on the surface. At first glace, one could easily mistake the makers' inspiration for a pin-art board, but upon speaking with Laura, we were surpised to learn the collection's inspiration was a little closer to home- stickle bricks! Laura expertly negotiates the fine line between a jeuvenile stimuli and Kinley's mature style, which are seemingly
Providing a flash of light through a faceted earring or the gentle sheen of a polished pippin in opaque semi-precious stones, briolettes and pippins are a wonderful way to use gemstones in jewellery. These dangling treasures show off the cutter’s skill with the same cut or polished finished on all sides while being drilled to one side of the stone in order for it to be suspended from wire or thread or mounted with a cap. Cuts Delicate marquise-shaped or flattened drops cut with either an oval section, round-section chubby ‘onions’, or long delicate top-drilled pippins are just a few

Introducing ALINKA, a new contemporary bijou star within Australia’s fine jewellery sphere. Conceived by St. Petersburg born, Sydney-based designer Alina Barlow, ALINKA combines a youthful modernity with the story-telling traditions of her native Russia. Barlow’s flair for jewellery design began in her youth when she would tinker with coloured wire to create bracelets and rings to swap with friends. Five years ago, Barlow reawakened that passion and began designing one-of-a-kind pieces for private clients. This led to the founding of ALINKA in 2014, and her debut collection ‘The Winter Palace’, inspired by St. Petersburg’s rich history and the Kremlin’s pentagonal
For the fourth consecutive year, students and staff of Central Saint Martins return to Vitsoe in Munich to display their work as equals. The exhibition, Fabricate, showcases the work of 42 staff and students of the BA Jewellery Design course, and celbrates the course's diverse and lively approach to contemporary jewellery and objects.
