Every year, Spring inevitably brings with it wedding season. The Art of Brooches - L'École Van Cleef & Arpels

The history of brooches reflects the social and technical evolution of humanity. During Antiquity, some mysterious fibulae made with bronze spirals tell us that this object was perhaps firstly used to secure clothing. As a military badge, a sign of love and devotion, an expression of personal opinions or simply worn for Glamor, the brooch is rich in many meanings which we invite you to study in this Talk. With a

Simply brilliant, Artist-Jewellers of the 1960s and 1970s

Simply Brilliant Artist-Jewellers of the 1960s and 1970s In Cooperation with the Cincinnati Art Museum 27 March through 27 June 2021 Simply put, jewellery of the 1960s and '70s was revolutionary. If the 1950s were demure and controlled, the 1960s became an era of youthful rebellion and radical cultural change -and a new style of jewellery was part of that zeitgeist. Rock 'n' roll, the Vietnam War, the Kennedy assassinations, the civil rights and women's movements, the widespread use of hallucinogenic drugs, and the concept of free love are all associated with these tumultuous decades. From space-age plastic hoop earrings to the hippie's

We like big hearts and we cannot lie

What better way is there to make a statement than with a whole load of heart? This summer we welcome the return of statement-making and colourful pieces versus the dainty and delicate trend that trumped the chic list for so long. The heart motif is an ever-popular choice; from text emoticons, clothing embellishments to tattoo design but possibly the most powerful of all is when it appears in the jewellery we wear. These days, the heart motif can represent a range of core themes from friendship and affection to deep romantic love and devotion. A significant motif in antique jewellery,

A Stroke of Genius- Becca Macdonald’s Brushstroke Collection takes Wearable Art Literally

At IJL this year, Kickstart winner Becca Macdonald captured our imaginations with her ‘Brushstroke’ collection, charmingly displayed on a canvas. Propped up by an easel, solid silver paint strokes danced fluidly over the rough grain, capturing perfectly the texture of an artist’s brush stroke, evidence of a person that is, or once was. Their passions; their movements; their talents.  Becca specialises in capturing the 'evidence of presence', a concept that has fascinated her for some time. The designer says: “I want to grasp the untouchable. I love the idea of capturing a fleeting moment and preserving the beauty in that

I had purchased an amazing pendant from a friend’s store and had really fallen in love with it!
