The Goldsmiths’ Centre in London has awarded four jewellers and silversmiths a Business Catalyst (Small) Grant of £1,000 to accelerate their businesses to the next phase of growth. The grants, funded by philanthropic giving from The Goldsmiths’ Company members to the Goldsmiths’ Company Charity’s 1327 Fund, will help Rebecca Oldfield, Clio Saskia, Natalia Majewska and Aishleen Lester to access essential specialist knowledge, equipment or marketing tools. Veteran jewellery industry stalwart Michael Hoare has passed after a long battle with cancer. Michael studied in the mid seventies at Leicester Polytechnic now De Montford University, and achieved a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art. The workshop is in the Goldsmiths’ Centre, Britton Street, London (2 minutes walk from Farringdon Station) and very close to Hatton Garden. It is a great place to meet with clients – the atrium with receptionist provides an impressive welcome into the building and it also has an onsite café. The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Library is a reference resource for jewellers and silversmiths and its library catalogue is now  online . The library’s holdings include books, articles and images on goldsmithing, silversmithing and hallmarking: from technical manuals to hip hop jewellery and 21 century silversmithing. The library is open from Tuesday to Thursday, from 10am to 4.30pm and all researchers are welcome, by appointment. The Goldsmiths Company has announced that Dr Frances Parton has been appointed as Deputy Curator in the Collections Team. The Deputy Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office in London, Dr Robert Organ, is to retire after 21 years of service. Robert began his career at the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2000 as Superintendent Assayer of the London Assay Office, before taking over as Deputy Warden (Managing Director-equivalent) in 2006. The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council  (GC&DC) has appointed John Ball, managing director at British fine jewellery manufacturer Brown & Newirth, as its new Chair for the next two years. John takes over the role of Chair from Anne-Marie Reeves, who has come to the end of her two-year term, but will remain on Council. Having joined the GC&DC as a council member in 2020, John has held the position of Vice Chair of Council for the last two years, assisting Anne-Marie. These residential scholarships are being made available to accelerate the professional careers of promising silversmiths. Each scholarship is for a period of one month or two months, learning a variety of silversmithing skills in an intensive residential placement either in Shetland or Sheffield with master silversmiths Rod Kelly, Brett Payne and Chris Perry. The scholarships include the cost of tuition, travel, accommodation and a subsistence bursary. Each one month scholarship has a value of £5250.00. The training will cover in detail:

David Fowkes has been running his own atelier, David Fowkes Jewellery, for the last 25 years. Edinburgh Assay Office’s CEO and Assay Master assumes international Chairman role

Scott Walter, who is the chief executive and master of the Edinburgh Assay Office will take up the role of chairman of the Convention on the Control & Marking of Articles of Precious Metals (CCMAPM) at the end of November. Mr Walter held previous roles within the Convention sitting on the Standing Technical committee and the Vision and Strategy Working group. Mr Walter has recently completed a five-year term as chairman of the International Association of Assay Offices, which culminated in its merger with the CCMAPM.
