Goldsmiths' Centre Launches New Grant for 'Ambitious Learning Experiences'

Grants of up to £5,000 are being offered for 'ambitious learning experiences' as part of the Career Catalyst initiative, offered by the Goldsmiths' Centre, with support from the Goldsmiths' Company Charity and the Radcliffe Trust.  The idea was inspired by former Goldsmiths' Company Apprentice, award-winning jeweller and engraver Castro Smith, whose 2018 travels to Japan have informed and enhanced his recent work. The Goldsmiths’ Centre in London has awarded four jewellers and silversmiths a Business Catalyst (Small) Grant of £1,000 to accelerate their businesses to the next phase of growth. The grants, funded by philanthropic giving from The Goldsmiths’ Company members to the Goldsmiths’ Company Charity’s 1327 Fund, will help Rebecca Oldfield, Clio Saskia, Natalia Majewska and Aishleen Lester to access essential specialist knowledge, equipment or marketing tools. Grant Macdonald Silversmiths have recently completed a commission  comprising a silver falcon. Their falcon was meticulously made by hand, every feather chased in by hand  to obtain a realistic  look and feel as possible. At every stage of production the Grant  Macdo nald  master craftsmen used  their skill and knowledge to make sure that each piece of the work was perfect.  Chasing is an ancient technique, from the noun to chase referring to a  fu rrow  or indent, the metal is  moved not removed. Using this technique, every feather is observed and recreated  gi ving  a sense of  depth and movement. 

BFC Fashion Trust Announces 2017 Grant Recipients

Th e British Fashion Council has announced that its charitable initiative BFC Fashion Trust has awarded grants totalling  £450,000  between eleven designers; the largest donation by the trust to date. The Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open 2021 awardees are announced as Anna Berry, Cecilia Charlton, Jahday Ford, Vicky Higginson and Francisca Onumah and Helena Russell. Guðbjörg Kristín Ingvarsdóttir is a goldsmith, Jewellery designer and co-founder of the award-winning sustainable jewellery brand Aurum, Iceland's leading jewellery brand. Guðbjörg began her career studying goldsmithing at Copenhagen Technical College, completing her journeyman’s examination in 1993. She completed her master craftsman examination in goldsmithing at Reykjavík Technical College in 1994, subsequently returning to Copenhagen to study jewellery design at the Institute for Precious Metals.  Guðbjörg collaboratively ran the jewellery workshop Au-Art in Copenhagen from 1996 to 1999, before returning to Iceland where she founded the design and jewellery firm Aurum.
