The Goldsmiths’ Centre has awarded its first round of Business Catalyst (Small) Grants to four exceptional early-stage jewellery and silversmithing businesses,  made possible through the generosity of modern philanthropic giving via the Goldsmiths’ Foundation from members of the Goldsmiths’ Company. Each £1,000 grant will enable Kristina Merchant (Kmercht), Makila Nsika Nkaya (M.Kala), Katie Watson, and Estelle Melissa Burton to invest in essential tools, specialist training, and new collections to enhance production, expand product ranges, and advance their businesses. Veteran jewellery industry stalwart Michael Hoare has passed after a long battle with cancer. Michael studied in the mid seventies at Leicester Polytechnic now De Montford University, and achieved a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art. The City Fringe Partnership was a ground-breaking public and private sector alliance between the London Development Agency, the London boroughs and private business partners which ran from 1996 - 2009.  Through their European Development-funded project, the Jewellery Sector Investment Plan (JSIP), they created £3 million worth of jewellery support programmes, improving collaborative and training opportunities in the industry. A stark warning has been issued for the future of traditional craft skills in the UK, as new research by Heritage Crafts has identified 20 more crafts at risk of vanishing from the UK, in the latest major update of its pioneering project – the Red List of Endangered Crafts – published today. The Trustees of the South House Workshop Trust are delighted to announce ELEVEN fully-funded silversmithing graduate scholarships for 2025. These residential scholarships are being made available to accelerate the professional careers of promising silversmiths. Each scholarship is for a period of one month or two months, learning a variety of silversmithing skills in an intensive residential placement either in Shetland or Sheffield with master silversmiths Rod Kelly, Brett Payne and Chris Perry. Just over a decade ago, the UK jewellery industry was lacking accessible information.  Organisations in the trade were keeping themselves to themselves, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with the latest developments.    In 2006 we founded Benchpeg, and launched the first digital newsletter for the jewellery industry and allied trades aimed at promoting information from across the trade and bridging the gap of information out there and accessibility to it.
