GIA Develops Free Gem Guide for Artisanal Miners

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America), working with nonprofit international development organization Pact, have recently launched a pilot study to test a new rough gem guide. The guide was developed specifically to offer basic gemological and market knowledge for artisanal miners in gem-producing regions. Gift card industry launches campaign to drive £2.3 billion high street recovery

The gift card and voucher industry, led by the  Gift Card & Voucher Association (GCVA) , has urged the government  to raise the tax free gift card limit to £500, which could bring the high street an estimated spending boost of more than £2 billion*.  The proposal would involve the government increasing the tax-free gifting allowance of  £50 currently permitted through  HMRC’s Trivial Benefits Allowance  to £500, and encouraging employers across the nation to use the scheme to thank their staff for their hard work over the past few months of COVID-19 uncertainty. A young Orkney jewellery designer has re-created a rare, 1,400-year-old Pictish necklace, the original of which is kept within the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Zoe Davidson crafted her 1kg solid silver version of the famous Whitecleugh Chain, discovered in Lanarkshire in 1869, after a personal commission from Orkney archaeology tour guide, Caz Mamwell. The North East social enterprise, which opened in 2018, was commissioned by Friends of Duff House to create a gift to present to the Argentine Ambassador during the bicentennial celebrations of the South American General’s visit to Banff in 1824.
