Diamonds Are Forever

Happy birthday month to all you April babies out there! With Spring in full swing and summer fashion trends ready to ring-a-ding-ding, the diamond dazzles as queen bee in this months gemstone spotlight! Owing to their superior robust structure, remarkable luster and beautiful crystal lattice patterns reflecting and refracting light spectrums, the diamond sparkles with a hidden beauty of intrigue and desirable finery. Diamonds are not only a notoriously ancient coveted treasure of the wealthy elite but it is highly loved many  gemmologosts  for being one of the only gemstones made entirely from one element- carbon. Owing to its isometric

Diamonds Are Forever: The Birthstone of April

It's true that diamonds are a girl's (and guys) best friend, especially as those fortunate enough to be born in April have one of the most treasured birthstones in the gem world: Diamonds. Diamond Overview Diamonds attain the reputation of being most of the most prized and rare gemstones due to their level of toughness. In fact, diamonds are 58 times harder than any other mineral on Earth and can only be cut by another diamond. Diamonds are made from only one element: a pure carbon lattice which can occur in several colours including pink, yellow, red, green and blue.

Bounty of riches for Lucara Diamonds at Karowe

Lucara Diamond's stock rises ever higher after they rolled out yet another massive diamond from their treasure trove Karowe mine in Botswana, on the northern fringe of the Kalahari Desert.  This one, a 472 carat light brown stone, is reckoned to be the third largest ever recovered at the state-of-the-art mine, which was only comissioned in 2012 and has quickly become one of the biggest producers of diamonds in the world. The Vancouver-based mining company acquired the Karowe Diamond Mine from De Beers in 2009  when after 40 years of mining small and low grade diamonds at the site, the

Domino’s Diamonds Scintillate at IJL

Domino’s recently refreshed ‘Scintillating Diamond’ collection was very well received at International Jewellery London earlier this month. The stunning earring and neckwear range features diamonds suspended on fine threads to create additional movement and sparkle. Pieces can be purchased as a suite, providing great add-on sales, or can be mixed and matched across the collection to suit individual style and taste. Available in 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, this striking range features HSi certificated diamonds. So what are the reasons for the pull that this collection

Cheaper and cleaner - the way forward for diamonds?

It takes between one and three billion years of intense heat and pressure to make a pure diamond....unless you believe the boffins at Cardiff University who reckon they can make a diamond in a few days. In a laboratory. And no one, they say, can tell the difference. For a while now, more and more companies have been growing their own diamonds, selling them at around 15-20% less than natural gems.  Making them in a laboratory leaves no carbon footprint and the end result is identical as far as the naked eye is concerned, or so they say, with only

"Our unparalleled access to millions of diamonds each year, long-standing relationships with major research institutions and mission-driven dedication to sharing everything we learn make GIA uniquely able to help expand understanding of the fundamental forces

‘Tis The Season To Buy Diamonds Jeremy France Jewellers Host VIP Festive Fundraiser

Special celebrity guest, James Murray, was in attendance representing the Murray Parish Trust, a local charity that Jeremy France Jewellers have been proudly supporting this year.  The Grade 2* listed building, situated at the very heart of historic Winchester’s bustling High Street, was decked to impress. Little of the shop remained untouched by the festive spirit as the decadent decorations also extended up through the gallery, with huge suspended Christmas wreaths visible from each level of the stunning three-storey showroom. With a traditional nutcracker theme running throughout and every detail adorned in beautiful bespoke decorations, the shop had been sprinkled

A Touch of Noir

When we think of diamonds we're used to picturing white sparkly stones, so what if we were to say that alongside those bright glistening stones is a dark step sister that is becoming equally popular? In recent years, the demand and popularity for nonconventional stones - particularly in engagement rings- has found black diamonds to be one of the most popular choices of fancy-coloured diamonds. Previously held in low regard, natural-colour black diamonds continued to be unpopular until designers started to implement them into their collections in the late 20th century; often contrasting them with colourless pave diamonds. Perhaps the

GIA Suspends Diamond Sealing Services

Effective immediately, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will suspend diamond sealing services. The Institute is taking this action after recently encountering a small number of GIA sealing packets that had been compromised by third parties after the sealing packets left GIA.  In these instances, GIA determined that the diamonds originally enclosed in the compromised packets had been replaced with HPHT (high-pressure, high-temperature) treated natural diamonds. The substitute treated diamonds superficially matched the GIA report information for the original diamonds, including information on the sealing packet data label. GIA is suspending sealing services in all locations indefinitely, pending an investigation of

Shine bright like a diamond this April

Those born in the month of April are fortunate enough to have one of the most prized and regal gems as their birthstone. For all those April babies, diamonds really are a girl's (and boy's) best friend. From the Greek word " ad ámas " meaning "unbreakable", diamonds have been the desired gem for centuries; arguably as early as 4 BC due to its unique characteristics and qualities. Historically diamonds first became popular in India where the Imperial Colony and moguls mined diamonds from deposits along three major rivers. Diamond is made of pure carbon and it is the way that

De Beers nail colours to the synthetic diamond mast with Lightbox launch

Man-made diamonds might not be forever but they are for long enough to persuade De Beers to part with millions and millions to capitalise on the growing demand worldwide for cheaper, traceable stones. De Beers have in fact been producing lab-grown diamonds for years but only industrialists will have been familiar with their products, since they have been used only in equipment for mining and drilling and making semiconductors.  Using them for jewellery was a step too far, they maintained, and they were vocal in their reluctance to go down the synthetic path. Until now that is. This week, they
