Savvy student seals Swiss success

A Birmingham City University [BCU] horology [the study of watches and clocks] student was treated to a trip to the historical home of Swiss watchmaking, after winning a major competition sponsored by British watch retail giants Christopher Ward. Marcus Laing, a student at BCU’s School of Jewellery, enjoyed a week-long trip to the picturesque town of Biel, Switzerland – complete with a grand tour of Christopher Ward’s manufacturing facilities. The competition saw second-year BA Horology students at the university enter unique watch and clock designs as part of an end-of-year module. Laing used cutting-edge Computer Aided Design [CAD] technology available

Highlights of New Designers 2023

On Friday Benchpeg visited the New Designers show 2023. With a sparse showing of jewellery and silver specific courses in representation, combined craft courses are clearly becoming a dominant factor in educational pathways. However, it was great to see strength in many of the jewellery, silver, gold and horology specific course degree shows. Due to the retirement of a very experienced and valued member of our team we now have a position for a highly experienced and qualified jobbing jeweller or hand made mounter. The successful applicant will have completed a five year apprenticeship and have at least another five years experience as a working jeweller with references to support. The job will require working knowledge of all precious metals, ie, silver, gold, platinum and palladium.
