Signature design codes from luxury maisons are often reinterpreted time and time again, however, Harry Winston’s latest jewellery collection looks to a unique part of the brand’s history for inspiration writes Jodie Smith.
What do you think of when you hear the name Harry Winston? Renowned for his acquisition of some of the world’s most famous diamonds such as the Jonker, Hope, and Winston Legacy diamonds - as well as his philanthropic pursuits - Harry Winston is a name usually associated with enormous jewels, like the headline grabbing purple sapphire and diamond necklace which Jennifer Lopez sported on the Met Gala red carpet.
The latest collection from the house founded in 1932 is altogether a more subtle, wearable affair for everyday accessorising, and has taken cues from a universally appealing motif - the rosette. This symbol has appeared for centuries across many cultures, representing a multitude of meanings; which is why the rosette was chosen by Harry Winston to adorn the gates of his flagship New York Salon at 718 Fifth Avenue in a Neoclassical travertine townhouse. The gold rosette accents served as a symbol of optimism, opportunity, prospect and good fortune, and today this motif adorns the front gates of all Harry Winston salons worldwide.
With a rosette serving as the entryway hallmark to his elegant salon, doorways and gates were also an important metaphor in Harry Winston’s rich origins story. The tagline for the collection reads: ‘beyond the gates, discover what awaits…’ alluding to the world of highly curated, skillfully crafted luxury which can be found within Harry Winston salons.
The ‘Winston Gates’ collection is comprised of pendant necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings - all of which feature a 10 petal rosette, surrounded by a halo of diamonds and rendered in platinum, 18k yellow or rose gold and set with a diamond center stone. The rings in particular fit with this season’s trend for more masculine jewellery, designed to sit large on the finger with openwork detailing; while the subtle diamond embellishment hints toward the diamantaire legacy of the house.
This accessible collection is centered around a modern, fashionable talisman which can easily merge into one’s jewellery wardrobe. Lines such as ‘Winston Gates’ are the perfect gateway into fine jewellery; particularly for fans of luxury, for many of whom the name Harry Winston holds a tremendous caché. The geometric floral motif at the heart of the design appeals to the next generation of fine jewelry collectors, with an aim to bestow its positive message for the future to its wearer.
Whether you are looking for an affordable gift for a loved one (including yourself) or simply to update your jewellery collection, ‘Winston Gates’ will be available from June 2019 at Harry Winston salons worldwide.
