A new software link-up in North America means a customer can now leave a jeweller’s with a valuation and an insurance quote for the same piece, in the same visit. It’s a glimpse of where valuation software could be heading.

Getting a piece of jewellery valued and getting it insured have always been two separate jobs. The customer collects their valuation, takes it home, and then, if they get round to it at all, contacts an insurer and types the details in again. Somewhere in that gap, many pieces end up underinsured or not insured at all.

Instappraise, a Canadian cloud-based valuation platform used by retail jewellers, independent valuers and gemmologists, is trying to close that gap. It has connected its software directly to Jewelers Mutual® Group, the long-established US jewellery insurer founded by a group of Wisconsin jewellers in 1913.

How it works

When a jeweller or valuer finishes a valuation in Instappraise, they can request an insurance quote from Jewelers Mutual at the click of a button. The valuation figures and description of the piece pass straight into the insurer’s quoting system, with no retyping. Jewelers Mutual then emails the customer a personalised quote, and they can buy a policy in a few steps.

For the jeweller, it means less manual data entry and fewer errors. For the customer, it means they can leave the shop with everything they need to protect the piece.

“Our goal at Instappraise has always been to leverage technology to modernize the appraisal workflow and add measurable value to the jewelry professional’s business,” said Raphael Boivin, founder of Instappraise.

Mike Alexander, President of Jewelers Mutual, said the aim is to reach customers “right at the moment it’s most relevant”: just after they’ve learned what their jewellery is worth.

Why it matters

The valuation is the moment a customer is most aware of what a piece is worth, and most likely to act on it. Linking the two steps turns the valuation from a one-off document into the start of an ongoing relationship, with the jeweller at the centre.

It also raises questions the trade will want to consider as such links spread, including whether the jeweller’s role as an independent valuer sits comfortably alongside a direct route to a single insurer.

Availability

The link-up is being rolled out to selected Instappraise users through an early-access programme, with a wider release planned later in 2026. It is aimed at the North American market, and Jewelers Mutual’s personal jewellery insurance is not offered to UK customers.

Instappraise was founded in 2019 and is based in Calgary, Alberta. Its platform also connects with major gemmological laboratories.
