German tool maker BUSCH has brought together 12 carbide cutters in a single set for pavé work, designed especially for platinum, titanium and jeweller’s steel.
BUSCH has introduced the Pavé Set 5120, a set of matched cutters for creating pavé settings. The 12 tools come from the company’s AU series and are made from ultra-fine-grain carbide, which BUSCH says gives effective material removal and long tool life.
The set is aimed at jewellery materials that are hard to machine, such as platinum, titanium and jeweller’s steel. The cutters can also be used on softer metals, including gold and silver.
One set for each stage of the setting
The set covers each stage of making a delicate pavé setting:
- Pre-drilling: four short carbide twist drills, with cutting diameters of 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 mm
- Reaming the seats: six carbide round burs, with cutting diameters of 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.3 mm
- Separating the grains: two carbide circular saw blades, 2.3 mm in diameter, with cutting edge thicknesses of 0.2 and 0.3 mm
BUSCH presents the set as an accessible introduction to ultra-fine-grain carbide cutters for setters who have not used them before. The tools are supplied in a reusable sliding box, so they can be stored in order of size and found quickly at the bench. As with all cutters in the AU series, each tool has a gold ring on its shank so it can be identified as ultra-fine-grain carbide at a glance.
