The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has reinforced its foundations to uphold the highest standards of governance, compliance, and student experience. Following a regulator-advised pause in new student recruitment, the Academy has strengthened its leadership, operations, and quality assurance processes, positioning BAJ for long-term stability and renewed growth.

Renewed Leadership and Governance

BAJ now operates under a refreshed leadership team and governance structure that unites academic, operational, and industry expertise. Dr Matthew J. Williamson, Principal Fellow of Advance HE (PFHEA), has been appointed Principal. He brings more than 30 years of higher education leadership experience across Russell Group, post-92, and specialist institutions. Dr Williamson has chaired the UK Heads of Educational Development Group and contributed to national quality enhancement initiatives with the Scottish Funding Council, Open College Network, GuildHE, Universities UK, and Advance HE.

Working alongside him is Chief Operating Officer Amir Shaikh, who has been part of BAJ since 2016, leading operational delivery and validation for degree-level study. Drawing on his wider commercial experience, Amir’s appointment—following a review of BAJ’s operational needs—supports the Academy’s continued stability and strategic growth.

BAJ’s leadership is guided by a newly appointed Board of Governors, chaired by Neal Sussman (formerly Marketing Director at De Beers and Burberry), which combines senior expertise in academia, finance, and the creative industries to steer BAJ’s next phase of development.

Commitment to Students and Quality

Current students continue to receive high-quality teaching and support, and all graduating learners have received their certificates. While a small number of refunds are being finalised, BAJ remains committed to resolving all outstanding cases promptly and in full alignment with its Student Protection Policy.

All previous legal matters have now been fully concluded, confirming the Academy’s renewed stability and the strength of its governance and financial oversight.

A Message from the Principal

“This period has allowed us to strengthen BAJ’s pillars and ensure our students continue to receive exceptional, industry-relevant education. Our vision is to empower learners to thrive, and we are committed to delivering on that mission with integrity and confidence.”

— Dr Matthew J. Williamson, Principal

Looking Ahead

With strengthened leadership, enhanced quality-assurance systems, and renewed confidence, BAJ reaffirms its position as a centre of excellence for jewellery and creative education. The Academy is working with awarding bodies on the phased reopening of programmes and is progressing discussions with potential validation partners to support future degree-level study. Proud of its alumni shaping the industry, BAJ remains committed to equipping the next generation of creative and professional talent with the skills, confidence, and entrepreneurial mindset to succeed — drawing on our jewellery heritage and expanding expertise in business and IT.
