A family workshop in Brighton is setting locks of pet fur into silver jewellery, for owners who want to celebrate or remember an animal they love.

For many owners a pet is part of the family, and losing one can be as hard as any bereavement. Fur & Forever, a small Brighton business, has built its work around that bond, making jewellery that holds a small lock of an animal’s fur.

The company was founded by Jack and Mel Lockyer after their own search for high-quality pet memorial jewellery came up short. Today the workshop makes sterling silver and selected gold pieces using fur, hair, whiskers, feathers and cremation ashes, for customers across the UK and beyond. Qualifying precious-metal pieces are hallmarked through the London Assay Office.

The process starts with the owner. Customers

are sent a kit with instructions, protective packaging and prepaid tracked return postage so they can send the fur safely to the workshop. There, a small lock is set in resin within a silver ring or heart pendant and finished by hand. Because each piece uses the fur supplied, each one reflects that animal’s colour and character. Any fur not used is returned with the finished jewellery.

Not every piece is a memorial. Some owners commission jewellery to celebrate a pet that is still very much by their side, and the brand presents its rings and pendants as Christmas gifts as much as keepsakes. For people buying for someone else, gift cards let the recipient choose a design and send in the fur later.

The business also pays attention to packaging, using plantable wildflower seed paper, recycled cardboard and cards made from cotton garment offcuts.

Fur & Forever is a trading name of South Downs Designs Ltd.
