This fall Mawi is thrilled to launch its new 'Ball Breaker' collection that screams nothing but elegant indivduality through its asymmetric designs and sleek geometric forms.
Ball Breaker takes inspiration from iconic French erotic novel The Story of O, combining strong linear chains and futuristic golden orbs. These opulent mechanical accents featuring bolted chains and industrial size T bars are tied around collar bones and wrapped across hips as an unapologetic expression of unadulterated restraint and titillation. This collection of sophisticated bondage-luxe exudes high octane drama and promises to be a fierce defender.
The namesake of the brand, Mawi was born in Manipur, Northwest India to diplomat parents. A creatively rich upbringing and a globetrotting childhood inspired her iconic, distinctly eclectic style and eventually led her to study Fashion Design at the Auckland Institute of Technology in New Zealand. After graduating and spending her formative design years in New York, Mawi was drawn to the dynamically hip and creative hubbub of London. It was here that she met Tim, with whom she began to form the foundations of the brand over a mutual love of antiques, ornaments and trinkets.
It all began with a charm necklace - a customised item of jewellery to which Mawi added her own jewels and vintage baubles. This original statement piece inspired hundreds of copycat versions across the globe, and led to the successful launch of the MAWI brand at London Fashion Week in 2002. Fashion editors, buyers and stylists alike all fell head over heels for the designer’s innovative blend of cutting-edge fashion with old-school glamour, supported by traditional and tribal undertones for a truly unique aesthetic. Mawi had discovered an aspirational niche for high end costume jewellery and accessories; redefining luxury ideals through fashion-forward styling.
Each MAWI creation provides an ornamental meeting place for the past, present and future; enduring the test of time long after seasonal whims have diminished.
