Artist Jeff Lowe presents a series of sculptural jewellery alongside his monumental metal sculptures and vibrant screenprints in his 2020 solo exhibition In The Close Distance at Pangolin London.

The exhibition is on until 22 February 2020 and marks a major shift in the artist’s usual aesthetic through a change in technique, material and bold use of colour. His newest series uses curved sheets of painted aluminium which form circular structures, revealing layers and overlap.

The internationally acclaimed sculptor Jeff Lowe came to prominence in 1974 with his first one man show at the prestigious Leicester Galleries in Londonʼs Cork Street. Lowe represented Britain at the Paris Biennale. Lowe won the Sainsbury award in 1975 and the Pollock-Krasner award in 1993. Over the past forty years he has made sculpture on a daily basis and played a major role in advancing abstract sculpture.

The artist exhibited his jewellery with Pangolin London for the first time in 2017, in the exhibition Sculptors’ Jewellery. Lowe’s pieces were shown alongside works by Cornelia Parker, Anish Kapoor, Picasso and Dali.

Lowe’s jewellery uses smaller shapes and elements from his large scale sculptures with the artist using off cuts of brass and copper. After spending time working with heavy and difficult materials, Lowe has commented on how he found the process of working on a smaller scale therapeutic. Pieces are coated in rose gold, nickel and some incorporate painted brass and copper.

The jewellery pieces are not ‘fine’ jewellery, instead they serve as wearable extensions of Lowe's larger scale sculptures. Lowe has also found that the jewellery has a way of influencing and feeding into his larger sculptures. Eight pieces are included in the exhibition with prices ranging from £650 - £700.

Born in 1952 and educated at St. Martins School of Art, Lowe lives and works in both London and the Algarve in Portugal. Lowe was taught by amongst others, Sir Anthony Caro, Phillip King and William Tucker. Recent solo exhibitions include Object Lessons with Pangolin London, an exhibition of his early 80's steel sculptures at Whitford Fine Art; other significant exhibitions include Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery, Guggenheim, Venice, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, Galerie Josine Bockhoven, Amsterdam, Robert Steele Gallery, New York, Bodo Niemann Gallery, Berlin, Waddington & Shiell Gallery, Toronto, Musee Dʼart Moderne, France and The National Gallery, Australia, Flowers Gallery, London, Whitford Fine Art, London, and Henry Moore Institute, Leeds.
