Eve Balashova: Playfully Delicate

Evegenia Balashova’s body of work is an ecosystem of delicately balanced dichotomies. Integral to the soul of each piece is the initial juxtaposition of modern digital manufacture and traditional metalwork techniques. Those familiar with the Russian-born jeweller’s work will recognise her work by its unique use of 3D printed nylon in tandem with understated metal finishings.

Joy is a persistent influence in Balashova’s work. Light-hearted cocktail inspired colour combinations and confectionery-shaped pins have a youthful spontaneity, whilst expertly finished metalwork provides a sophisticated appeal.

The flat, saturated matte finish of the 3D printed nylon provides a depth that draws the onlooker in, in contrast with the reflective nature of the gold and silver fixings. Rich burgundies and blues are classic paired with solid silver and gold tones, whilst hand-dyed ombre colour combinations draw the eye over the piece.

Movement is explored through several modes in Balashova’s jewellery, with rigidity playing an equally important role. Mainstays within the collection, the brushstroke earrings, which come in a range of colours, are a perfect example. Nylon ‘strings’ are moulded into a hoop, with the texture of the layered strands, coupled with the saturated colour, emulating an artist’s paint brush-stroke. The strands are soft enough to provoke movement when worn or touched, but firm enough to hold their form. A similar technique is used in the stunning Fibonacci brooch (below, left).

However, mastery is most evident when Balashova pushes the boundaries of her form. Taking geometric patterns and shapes that conform to order, Eve imbues them with a calm chaos by creating rippling waves through long, linear lines. Some standout examples of this being the Cable and Transition necklaces (Cable necklace pictured below) and the Pressure brooch (above, right).

Balashova is now a recognised face within the UK jewellery scene, with regular appearances at prestigious nationwide jewellery showcases, such as The Goldsmiths’ fair, which made its digital debut this year for the first time in its long-standing history. Evidently, her careful navigation of both classic and cool, as well as a strategically curated range of price points, have garnered a broad audience, whilst the wise choice to master and explore the edges of her medium sees Balashova continue to grow as an artist.
