The Goldsmiths’ Centre, the UK’s leading charity for the professional training of goldsmiths, announced the keynote speaker for its business taster programme Getting Started, which takes place from 7 – 11 January 2019, today. Award-winning jeweller Alex Monroe will deliver the keynote address giving an invaluable insight for recent graduates from UK Precious Metal or related courses into what it takes to set up successful creative careers.

Getting Started applications close this Wednesday 3 October 2018. This intensive free course supports talented jewellers and silversmiths to develop their own business or establish themselves as part of a larger company. With a host of invited experts, this intensive week covers topics from selling work to galleries, how to manufacture collections to running successful PR social media campaigns. This year successful applicants will also benefit from displaying their work in a special Getting Started Showcase at the Goldsmiths’ Centre from 5 December to 10 January 2019.

Chris Oliver, Head of Professional Training for the Goldsmiths’ Centre commented: “Getting Started gives specific advice and tips tailored to the needs of jewellers and silversmiths that they can practically apply to their emerging businesses and careers. Having a keynote speaker of Alex Monroe’s calibre is an amazing opportunity for recent graduates to learn from his experiences first-hand, as well as hear about his commitment to the use of UK based partners and ethical practices.”

Getting Started 2018 participant Ella Fearon Lowe explains: “I think other people should take part in Getting Started as it just an incredible opportunity to stop and reflect and look at your own practice and what you do well and what you maybe need to work on. It is really a great opportunity to network – I’ve met masses of people who are very influential, and who I didn’t feel legitimate in approaching or maybe I didn’t think would be listening to me.”
