The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council (GC&DC) has appointed a new Chairman for the next two years – renowned British silversmith Andrew Putland.
Taking over from retiring Chairman Jos Skeates, Putland is looking forward to immersing himself in the role, continuing the Council’s excellent collective work to extend the reach, profile and effectiveness of its annual competition, The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards. Putland also plans to launch an online Centenary Book celebrating the Awards’ 100th year in 2018.
With almost 40 years’ experience as a silversmith and goldsmith, Andrew Putland, fondly known as Andy, is a highly-experienced and respected designer and craftsman, who has himself won several prizes at past Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council Awards.
Over the course of his career, Andy has created works for Italian luxury brand Bulgari, both for retail and for its Knightsbridge hotel, the Pope John Paul II and architect Richard Meier, the Saudi Royal Family, and Imperial College London. He has also produced a pair of silver cups to commemorate the 90th birthday of the Queen Mother and a collection of contemporary silver for Lichfield cathedral.
Working closely with business partner Carl Padgham, whom he met while studying at Medway College in the 1980s, Andy is one half of Padgham & Putland, celebrated silversmiths and goldsmiths based in the Kent countryside.
Speaking of his appointment as Chairman of the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council, Andy said,
“It is an honour and privilege to become Chairman of the Council, of which I have served as a Council member for five years. Over the course of my career - from my time as a student to my work and business as Padgham & Putland - I have been aware of the prestige and importance of the Council and its annual Awards. I look forward to progressing the hard work and achievements of our retiring chair Jos Skeates in developing the Awards for the future, as we continue to encourage, inspire and celebrate brilliance in design and craftsmanship in the UK jewellery, silversmithing and allied trades.”
The Council expressed their gratitude to Jos Skeates, who remains a Council member, for his enthusiasm, vision and ambition. The appointment of Putland coincides with the launch of the new Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council website which Skeates had championed during his chairmanship.
