Benchpeg brings you a comprehensive look at some of the best jewellery looks of the red carpet at the 2020 Academy Awards. This year, diamonds dominated the red carpet in all their forms, but especially in necklaces.
After several years in hiding, the statement necklace is back with a bang. Rounded shapes cut close to the neckline were a popular choice, worn by Mindy Kaling, Gal Gadot and Greta Gerwig. Pop culture innovators, such as Billie Eilish, bucked the trend by staking reems of jewellery.
Highlights in 2020 were the vintage jewels from the Cartier archives donned by Timothee Chalamet and ethical jewellery brands, such as Forevernark, worn by Janelle Monae and Scarlett Johansson making headlines.
Mindy Kaling in Chopard
Actress and writer Mindy Kaling let her jewellery do the talking in this sunburst diamond necklace from Chopard's high jewellery collection, featuring 78.46-carats of marquise-cut diamonds and 46.33-carats of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold. earrings with 4.23-carats of pear-shaped diamonds and .31-carats of diamonds set in 18k white gold and a ring with a 1.23-carat diamond and 5.12-carats of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold. The actress was followed by a security guard for the evening, protecting the precious jewels.
When asked about the necklace in her red-carpet interview with Variety Magazine, Kaling said “In the movie Oceans 8, we stole a necklace that was identical to this one.” Of course, referring to the famous Cartier design created for the film. Though both feature diamonds, they are quite different in their design.
She continues “It would scare me to know [how much it’s worth], if you’re going to send a grown man to watch a necklace, it’s got to be, what, north of $100,000?”, when corrected on the price by the presenter she said “millions? Now that’s frightening me!”
Timothée Chalamet in Cartier
Speaking of Cartier, Timothée Chalamet adorned his contraversial Stella McCartney tracksuit with a vintage Burmese ruby and diamond vintage brooch from the brands archives. Hailing from the era of Hollywood glamour, the 1955 piece was the perfect choice for the acting sensation, who last year was voted Best Dressed Man in the World.
Gal Gadot & Charlize Theron in Tiffany
Tiffany and Co dressed the necks of Chalize Theron and Gal Gadot with a smattering of diamonds.
Gadot sported the Tiffany Clara necklace. Designed by Tiffany's chief artistic officer Reed Krakoff, the piece features over 125 individual diamonds that graduate in size, totalling 77 carats - the centre diamond alone, sourced in Russia, consists of 11 carats.
Theron wore a diamond necklace from the Tiffany Fall 2020 High Jewellery collection, which took over 18 months to complete. Again, designed by Reed Krakoff, the piece consists of two strands of diamond ribbons joined by a diamond staple, and culminating in an exquisite marquise diamond of over 21 carats.
Zazie Beetz, Greta Gerwig and Antonio Banderas in BVLGARI
BVLGARI's presence at the Oscars this year was huge. Pieces by the brand were worn by Antonio Banderas, Zazie Beetz, Greta Gerwig, Lilie Aldridge and Brie Larson.
Gerwig oozed glamour in a BVLGARI High Jewellery necklace set in platinum, featuring seven emerald beads, surrounded by diamonds. She finished her look with high jewelry earrings and ring, for a total of over 96 carats of emeralds and diamonds. The sweetheart neckline of her Dior Haute Couture gown was a perfect frame for the jewellery, whilst the emeralds complimented the moss green colour of it.
Actress and presenter at the night’s awards, Zazie Beetz layered two BVLGARI high jewellery necklaces, high jewellery earrings and two high jewellery rings, all in diamond and emerald, totalling almost 120 carats of diamonds and emeralds on the carpet.
Brie Larson in BVLGARI
Actress Brie Larson donned BVLGARI Divas’ Dream High Jewellery earrings in white gold and diamonds. The star of Captain Marvel finished her look with a Serpenti bracelet and rings.
Billie Eilish in CHANEL
Billie Elish's debut on the Oscars' red capet casued a stir in the fashion world, with headlines reporting that she had 'signle-handedly redefined red carpet fashion'. The young pop star wore head to toe Chanel, adorning her twist on the classic tweed suit with brooches in the luxury houses iconinc double C logo. She wore a mix of Chanel high and fashion jewellery in a nod to both where she came from and where she is now.
Elton John in Theo Fennell
Worn by Sir Elton John, Theo Fennell’s bespoke Rocketman Brooch boasts an 18ct White Gold 1.50ct Sapphire and 5.91ct Diamond. Alongside David Furnish, also wearing a bespoke Theo Fennell brooch, he posed upon arrival at Elton's 28th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Viewing Party in West Hollywood after the Awards ended.
Janelle Monae in Forevermark
Perhaps the sparkliest of all the looks at the 2020 Academy Awards was worn by actress Janelle Monae, who dazzled in a Swarovski encrusted gown by Ralph Lauren. Paired with this, she wore £700,000 worth of diamond jewellery by ethical brand Forevermark, including the Lace of Light choker in 18k white gold.
'I chose Forevermark because her gown is encrusted with crystals, so we needed diamonds with the most light and sparkle,' said Janelle's stylist, Alexandra Mandelkorn
Saoirse Ronan in Gucci
Gucci's own creative director Alessandro Michele had a hand in creating Saoirse Ronan's standout look from the Oscars. From Gucci's Haute Jewellery line, Ronan wears a set of stunning drop earrings, whilst a bee brooch adorns her updo.
Salma Hayek in Boucheron
Salma Hayak wore pieces from the French maison Boucheron's Feuilles de Laurier high jewellery line. Both the earrings and necklace-come-hair piece are crafted from mother-of-pearl and South Sea cultured pearls, paved with diamonds, on white gold. Hayek also sported the Feuilles d’Acanthe cuff and Goutte ring in white gold and diamonds.
Renée Zellweger in David Webb
Renée Zellweger kept her jewellery to a minimum, letting the David Webb Arch take the spotlight. The $46,000 ring from the jewellers' Twilight collection, is crafted from Fluted rock crystal, cabochon sapphire terminals, brilliant-cut diamonds, 18K white gold, and platinum.
Florence Pugh in Louis Vuitton
Dressed by Louis Vuitton, Florence Pugh wore an asymmetric ‘Goutte de Sang’ diamond and topaz necklace, featuring teardrop spinelle, from Louis Vuitton's medieval inspired high jewellery colletion ‘The Riders of the Knights’.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Harry Winston
