Grant Writer / Development Officer (Fixed Contract)

Bishopsland Educational Trust

Buscot, Oxfordshire (SN7) - Hybrid

Bishopsland Educational Trust is an internationally recognised charity dedicated to the training and education of early-in-career makers in the heritage craft of silversmithing. It is a residential organisation that mixes workshop space with accommodation to train silversmiths and jewellers. A long-standing charity with a proven 30-year track record, we have mentored and trained emerging silversmiths, creating opportunities for them to connect and learn from one another and established networks of skilled craftspeople across the UK and beyond.

Bishopsland recognises the importance of professional hand and traditional craft skills. We seek to reduce the barriers of entry to education for individuals more inclined towards vocational and practical career routes regardless of academic ability or means. That said, the vast majority of our attendees come to us once they have completed a degree in Metalwork or related Craft Degree, or an apprenticeship, but this is not a pre-requisite.

From our dedicated facilities in Oxfordshire, we have nurtured the careers of over 230 silversmiths and jewellers regardless of means, background or academic ability. Over 70% of our Fellows still work in the sector, with many having become leading craftspeople in our industry today. We believe in the transference of craft skills as vital to preserving our cultural heritage.

The Role

This is an exciting time to join one of the UK’s leading training organisations for early-in-career silversmiths. We have just moved to new premises in listed buildings on the National Trust’s Buscot & Coleshill Estate, and will be part of the Estate’s Heritage & Rural Skills Centre. As a result, we have embarked on a major capital fundraising programme seeking to raise £2mn+ in the coming years. In addition, we apply for operational funding to keep our costs as low as possible and to support students with bursaries.

As our Grant Writer you will be responsible for finding funding opportunities and writing polished proposals to secure grant funding. Your duties will include researching funding opportunities, maintaining a schedule of opportunities and deadlines, drafting grant requests and submitting reports for approval.

You should have excellent research and written communication skills, being able to clearly articulate why Bishopsland meets each specific grant-giver’s funding requirements. You will have prior experience in grant writing within the Arts or vocational training sectors, being able to demonstrate success in securing single and multi-year grants, preferably for capital projects.

Remuneration, Term & Location

This is a self employed, part-time role on a fixed term of 9 months, based on 20 hours per week at £20 per hour, with a bonus structure for meeting stretch targets related to securing funding from new sources.

The successful candidate will be able to work from home on a flexible basis, submitting a weekly log of hours/activity, and a monthly invoice.

We will provide a detailed onboarding programme which will require your presence for one day at our centre in Buscot (SN7).

If you live within easy travelling distance of our centre, you are of course welcome to visit more often although this is not a pre-requisite of the role.
