Bench Jeweller & Sampler
Maya Magal London
Islington, London N1
Overview
We are looking for an experienced Bench Jeweller & Sampler to join our London workshop and play a key role in the development of new Maya Magal collections.
Working closely with Maya, you will help turn initial ideas and sketches into finished prototypes - problem-solving at the bench, refining proportions and construction, and developing pieces that feel distinctive, wearable and true to the Maya Magal aesthetic.
Alongside the creative and sampling side of the role, you will support the smooth running of production, including technical specifications, costings, supplier liaison, quality control, customer orders and repairs. As a small, hands-on team, the role is varied, but the heart of it is jewellery-making, sampling and product development.
Responsibilities and Duties
Key aspects of the role are outlined below. As a small and growing brand, the position will continue to evolve, and responsibilities may develop in line with the needs of the business and the individual's strengths.
Design & Sampling
- Work closely with Maya to interpret initial concepts and drawings and develop them into prototypes and finished samples.
- Create and refine new jewellery designs at the bench, testing construction, proportion, finish and wearability.
- Troubleshoot technical challenges during development and suggest practical solutions.
- Produce accurate technical specifications for approved samples.
- Record material usage, labour and costings for each design.
- Support the development of new collections from first sample through to a production-ready piece.
Production & Quality
- Produce stock in line with purchase orders and production requirements.
- Liaise with trusted Hatton Garden subcontractors, including stone setters, casting houses and other specialist suppliers.
- Quality control outsourced work to ensure it meets Maya Magal standards.
- Source gemstones, materials and components from a range of suppliers.
- Support production planning and help ensure agreed timelines are met.
- Consider production methods, timings and costs to support commercial viability and profitability.
Customer Orders & Repairs
- Price made-to-order pieces based on materials, labour and specific customer requirements.
- Order materials and ready-made wedding bands from suppliers including Euro's and Domino's, with support from the Coal Drops Yard Store Manager where required.
- Oversee the creation of made-to-order pieces, maintaining quality control and ensuring deadlines are met.
- Assess and manage repairs and alterations, provide quotations and ensure work is completed to the required standard and within agreed timelines.
Workshop & Administration
- Help maintain the smooth day-to-day running of the workshop, including ordering tools, materials and consumables.
- Operate, maintain and care for workshop equipment.
- Keep clear and accurate records of invoices and expenditure from subcontractors and suppliers, working alongside our accountants in Google Sheets.
- Maintain strong working relationships with external suppliers and subcontractors.
- Provide accurate quotes and costings for new designs.
- Uphold company and legal health and safety standards in the workshop, along with security protocols associated with high-value gemstones, precious metals and customers' sentimental jewellery.
Must-Have Qualifications and Skills
- 3-5 years' bench experience working in 9ct and 18ct gold and platinum.
- Proven experience creating jewellery from drawings or initial design concepts.
- Strong sampling and prototyping skills, with the ability to take an idea through to a finished, production-ready piece.
- Proven capability producing technical drawings; experience with Adobe Illustrator-based designs is ideal.
- A strong understanding of jewellery construction, materials and production methods.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to work collaboratively within a team as well as independently.
- A flexible, can-do approach and willingness to contribute across a small, hands-on business.
- Honest, trustworthy and comfortable working with high-value materials and sentimental pieces.
- Enjoy working in a small team and contributing to a positive working environment.
Beneficial / Desirable Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge of Matrix/Rhino and the wider Adobe Suite.
- Existing knowledge of, or contacts within, Hatton Garden to support production.
- Experience working with external suppliers, casting houses and stone setters.
- A working understanding of jewellery photography to assist with capturing content.
Salary and Benefits
- Jewellery uniform allowance and product discounts.
- Flexible core working hours.
- 28 days of annual leave per year, plus one day for every additional year of employment, as well as an extra day off on your birthday.
- Proudly B-Corp pending status company with a friendly, people-based culture.
- Support for professional development and emotional wellbeing.
- Optional pension contributions.
