Immersive exhibition When the dust had settled explores memory and rebirth. Set inside the historic walls of Hackney's oldest building, the 13th century clock tower, it blends narrative jewellery and visual art pieces to inspire journeys of self-discovery and personal transformation.

Taking place between August 30 and September 3, the event is both a significant contemporary jewellery showcase and a highlight of East London’s cultural calendar for summer 2024, spotlighting the work of Karolina Brodnicka, Michaela Barochová and Maria Stella Lydaki.

First Floor: PAST |
Karolina Brodnicka

A narrow spiral staircase leads to the first floor, where fine-artist-turned-jeweller Karolina Brodnicka showcases retrospective art pieces alongside the debut of her new jewellery line, Reckoning, inspired by the experience of clearing her late grandfather's house. Karolina uses the act of creation as a means of healing, weaving a narrative of recovery and resilience that invites to confront and make peace with one’s own past. The theme of renewal is further explored in her Rebirth collection, where she reinvents pearls by transforming crushed fragments into new forms.

Second Floor: PRESENT |
Michaela Barochová

The rhythmic ticking of the tower's turret clock on the second floor anchors us in the present, encouraging to reflect on the perception of time and explore our emotions in the moment. Here, Michaela Barochová's new jewellery collection Fragmentation reassembles a shattered world in a novel way. Integrating her printmaking background into her jewellery practice, Michaela employs photo-etching to create unique textures on her pieces. These are then inked and transferred onto paper, resulting in debossed prints displayed alongside the jewellery.

Third Floor: FUTURE |
Maria Stella Lydaki

On the top floor, we encounter the sculptures and jewellery work of Maria Stella Lydaki. This space embodies the potential of the future, with her narrative jewellery evoking the ancient longing of Pythia, the famous prophetess of ancient Greece. We are invited to revive the oracular arts through interactive sculptures and meditations, while connecting with our deepest longings, and opening ourselves to a new vision that guides us toward a new beginning.

The Rooftop

The process of rebirth culminates in the final climb to the viewing terrace, where visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of London while reflecting on their personal journeys through the past, present, and future.

About

Karolina Brodnicka graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins (London, UK) in 2015, and gained diverse experience in fashion, design, and art before transitioning to jewellery making in 2017. Her work explores themes of human connections, repair and renewal, employing electroforming, technique of depositing metal on objects, to symbolise the preservation of memories and reconciliation with the past.

Michaela Barochová graduated with a BA in Jewellery Design at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art (Pilsen, Czech Republic) in 2018. In her art she works with metal, textile and wood and combines her printmaking background with her jewellery by employing the photoetching technique to texture her jewellery and use it to create unique prints. This process results in evocative talismans inspired by the Rorschach inkblot test, a psychological tool that explores the human psyche. Based on this concept, she launched her jewellery brand ‘Numinous’ in 2022.

Maria Stella Lydaki graduated with a BA in Jewellery Linking Bodies from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam, Netherlands) in 2022, weaves stories into metal, thread, and performance. Her work draws inspiration from the ancient and medieval symbols of her Greek heritage. Graduating during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health, borders, and themes of protection found a voice in her art, often expressed through a fairytale narrative.
