Ute Eitzenhöfer’s exhibition comprises three groups of work, united by an underlying Subtext. Driven always by a desire to make jewellery that is not only adornment but also a medium for social comment, her first group, Talk, confronts the power of words uttered, words broadcast through a microphone not written or printed, texted or tweeted. Formed like small microphones pinned to the lapel of a news reporter, these oxidised silver brooches set with tiny diamond chips and small pieces of onyx, trick the eye. Their appearance misleads us, possibly unsettles us. For Ute, they are ‘an actualisation of the point of jewellery as a status symbol’. What, she asks, are the status symbols of the present?

Discourse, the second group, explore hidden processes, concealment, handicap and the withholding of knowledge. Beneath rectangular slabs of oxidised silver we catch a glimpse of slices of unrefined amethyst, chalcedony, agate and rock crystal shimmering at the periphery of the form. Our eyes are teased by this hint of something beautiful at the heart of each piece – something both protected and trapped at the same time.

The third group, Circle, comprises a series of cylindrical, hermetic brooches. Geometrically austere, their forms are without the playful possibilities of the Talk series, dependent, like gemstones, on the incidental fall of light to illuminate them.
