In a new commission by the Holburne Museum, renowned artist and pioneer of contemporary British Craft Linda Brothwell has created a playground of textures and colours in stone, wood and metalwork in response to the most intricate works in the Holburne Museum’s collection. Brothwell’s work will be shown alongside the elaborate carved wooden, gilt bronze and hardstone plinths upon which Sir William Holburne displayed his porcelain and bronzes.

Many of Holburne’s plinths were separated from their objects in the 20th century, leaving an alluring and eclectic collection of empty plinths. Brothwell has created pieces of wearable jewellery in silver and quartz, presenting them on Holburne’s marble, ebony and gold plinths, recreating their missing counterparts. Brothwell has taken inspiration from the colours and textures of the plinths and the marks and abrasions caused by their now missing objects, forming playful vignettes of rare and precious metals.

The Missing is the latest commission in the On the Table series at the Holburne Museum. Since 2011, the Museum has been commissioning contemporary installations inspired its collection, building and garden. The works are displayed on the Ballroom Table, which houses the Museum’s permanent collection of historic silver and tableware, providing a surprising and quirky location for contemporary interventions.
Linda Brothwell will be in conversation with Catrin Jones, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Holburne Museum on 22 September. The two will discuss how Brothwell’s work engages with making, materials and place, and the process of creating The Missing.
