Studio Casting Techniques for Jewellery @ Flux Jewellery School

This weekend course introduces numerous home- studio casting techniques for jewellery and other small accessories.

What will I learn?

With focus firmly on the experimental, this is an exciting opportunity to try out a variety of approaches to casting and mould making. The aim is to equip you with techniques you can carry on exploring in your in the home studio..

When casting your outcome is determined by the type of mould you made. We present you with a comprehensive overview of the various techniques used in casting, both for studio and commercial use. We will also discuss methods for batch producing and approaches to making prototypes for mould making. Then over 2 days you'll get the chance to explore common studio techniques including  the use of cuttlefish, delft sand, balsa and plywood for mould making purposes. Initially we'll use pewter as our metal for casting, and we will also look at ways to incorporate other materials into the cast.

You may also work with silver if you wish, but you will need to bring your own metal. Additional advice will be given when you book your place.

What will I produce?

It is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive test pieces that could form the basis of a charm necklace or bracelet. We anticipate that your samples will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your future jewellery projects.

Materials

The course fee covers the cost of all non-precious materials. You will use pewter as the main material for casting. Additional materials (acrylic, beads, stones, shells etc) for inclusions and mould-making will also be provided.

You may also bring your own precious materials to work with. You can also recycle old silver jewellery if you wish. In this instance please note we recommend also using some silver casting grain to ensure good flow.

Can I get my work hallmarked?

We are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux – If you would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price.
