Contemporary British Silversmiths & Danish Guests at the V&A
In partnership with London Craft Week, the V&A, the Danish Silversmiths and Georg Jensen, supported by the Goldsmiths' Company
Throughout London Craft Week, Contemporary British Silversmiths, the UK’s leading association for designer silversmiths will be demonstrating the craft of silversmithing to the public, in the prestigious and world renowned surroundings of the V&A’s Silver Galleries.
LCW LogoParticipating alongside will be special guests from the Danish Silversmiths’ Association (Danske Sølvsmede), an exciting group set up in 1976 to renew and transform the craft of silversmithing. Denmark and Britain both have a very solid and vibrant tradition of the highest quality craftsmanship of silversmithing and both associations have a shared vision for contemporary silver.
Visitors to the V&A’s Silver Galleries will have the opportunity to find out how a sheet of silver becomes a finished piece, with members of Contemporary British Silversmiths on hand to tell visitors about the tools and processes used to create beautiful objects in this beautiful material. Different silversmiths will be demonstrating over each day of the event, showcasing the breadth of skill and creativity of today’s silversmiths.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to view Silver Speaks: ‘Idea to Object’, a display curated for Contemporary British Silversmiths by journalist and design critic Corinne Julius. Alongside this display, visitors will be able to view the latest commission by member Junko Mori for the Silver Trust that will end its journey at Number 10 Downing Street. A gallery talk will support this on Friday 5th May by curator Corinne Julius.
These demonstrations taking place during London Craft Week are part of Silver Speaks, a year long programme of events created by Contemporary British Silversmiths to celebrate silver in contemporary life.

The Danish Silversmiths [Danske Sølvsmede]
Danish Silversmiths is a group of individual artistic silversmiths that works within the field of contemporary silver hollowware and objects. The exhibition group was established in 1976 as a supportive initiative for the independent silversmiths that kept the tradition of high quality Danish studio silver vibrant. Since then the group has grown into a collegial organisation of diversity and artistic origin. With more than 30 members through times Danish Silversmiths has orchestrated about 40 exhibitions all over the world. Amongst others Vienna, Edinburgh and Dubai. Latest, in corporation with our colleges in the Contemporary British Silversmiths; a beautiful and impressive exhibition at the Danish Silver Museum at Koldinghus 2014. In 2016 we celebrated our 40 years jubilee retrospective exhibition. The main ambition for Danish Silversmiths is to continue the strong Danish tradition of artistic silversmithing through contemporary exhibitions and international cooperation with skilled colleges all over the world, encouraging modern studio silver to be brought to use.
On the 3rd and 4th May, the Danish silversmiths (Lasse Baehring and Lone Løvschal) will join Contemporary British Silversmiths each day to demonstrate the art of silversmithing live in the V&A’s Silver Galleries.
