Cockpit Arts, Deptford

Cockpit Arts’ celebrated Winter Open Studios - located in the creative South East London neighbourhood of Deptford and heart of Bloomsbury – brings you the chance to meet and shop directly with over 140 of London’s finest makers during two weekends. This twice-yearly shopping event is the only time Cockpit Arts is open to the public, making this an exclusive chance to meet some of the best craftspeople in London, see where it all happens and support this hub of creative talent.

Throwing open the studio doors, it’s the destination for festive shopping and to buy direct from Cockpit’s makers, designers and artists. Whether you’re looking for jewellery, homewares, ceramics or fashion accessories … there’s so much to choose from for a gift that will be truly treasured.

"A visit to Cockpit Arts is one of London’s most joyful winter experiences,” says Cockpit’s CEO, Annie Warburton, "whether a once-in-a-lifetime heirloom piece or a simple, hand-printed card, there’s little to beat buying fine craft in the studio where it was made, direct from the person who made it.

I love how people’s faces light up as they discover something new or get lost in browsing, conversation and the warmth of Cockpit's atmosphere.  It’s a convivial experience, far away from the affray of the high street, and many come back to us year after year to see what’s new.

There’s a special magic, like nowhere else - and gifts bought here carry that magic with them."

What’s new?

Cockpit has welcomed many new makers in 2019 and those opening the doors to their studios for the first time include:

Fashion jeweller Ella Fearon-Low (Cockpit Arts / Newby Trust Craft Excellence Award), wood-turner Arturo Soto, (winner of 2018 Cockpit Arts/UAL Artist/Maker Creative Enterprise Award and 2019 Turner’s Company Award), ceramicist Ula Saniawa (2019 Clear Insurance Award winner) and two 2019 Clothworkers’ Company Awardees, Jacob Monk and Ariane Fourquier.

Constructed-textile artist Richard McVetis joins Cockpit as recipient of the Cockpit Arts / Newby Trust Craft Excellence Awards. Richard was a 2018 finalist of the prestigious LOEWE Craft Prize, established by British fashion designer and LOEWE creative director Jonathan Anderson as the major annual international award for contemporary craft.
