Following on from 2014’s London Design Festival exhibition, Restless Futures, and 2015’s The Intelligent Optimist, Central Saint Martins is pleased to present Brain Waves.

As part of the London Design Festival, Central Saint Martins invites you to meet the minds of design’s next generation.

At the heart of the King’s Cross design district, welcoming Design Junction as a neighbour, Brain Waves presents the work of our leading design graduates, exploring the varieties of design intelligence they deploy in their work as they engage with uncertain futures.

As the complexities of contemporary life demand new ways of thinking, breadth of approach is essential. Brain Waves sets out four territories: ‘Creative Forensics’, ‘Empathic Invention’, ‘Haptic Thinking’ and ‘Shifting Reality’.

The aim is not only to show how different types of design intelligence are applied to process and object, but also their wider potential and application. Design is not the route to more things and new aesthetics, it is a key to making sense of the world.

Brain Waves presents the work of Central Saint Martins’ leading design graduates from across a wide range of disciplines. As the complexities of contemporary life demand new ways of thinking, this exhibition provides the remarkable responses of the next generation of designers, from the transformation of the everyday into the extraordinary to the invention of innovative materials.

New futures are considered through ‘empathic imagination’, ‘creative forensics’, ‘haptic thinking’ and ‘sense making’. Brain Waves serves to provoke thought and demand action, located at the heart of this year’s new destination for London Design Festival in King’s Cross.

The Brain Waves events programme will present the work of the participating designers in more depth through workshops, presentations and talks. The UAL Future Imaginaries talks season runs in conjunction with Brain Waves.

Brain Waves, Central Saint Martins’ contribution to London Design Festival 2016, explores the various modes of design intelligence that CSM designers deploy in their work. The exhibition illustrates how the students and staff of Central Saint Martins apply their thinking to the processes and objects of design and new futures. In so doing it presents models for other disciplines and publics to draw on for their own constructions of the future.
