2nd - 27th June 2021
Double Door Studios’, 7 Ward Road, Dundee, DD1 1LP
This June, the residents of Dundee City Centre’s Double Door Studios will hold an exhibition named ‘100 Jewels by 100 Women’, celebrating the achievements of craftswomen in our society.
The exhibition will feature one item of jewellery from each of the one hundred invited artists; women who have lived, studied and/or worked in Dundee during their careers.
Among the broad list of participants can be found many of Duncan of Jordanstone's tutors and alumni from over three decades. From national icons, such as Dot Sim and Ann Marie Shillito, to internationally renowned artists Lynne MacLachlan and Karen-Ann Dicken, and the first ever forensic jeweller, Dr Maria MacLennan. The pieces on show not only embody individual stories of the women who created them, but also represent the monumental contribution to the industry from practicing female jewellers.
Jewellery on show will range from colourful contemporary pieces made from alternative materials to stone set pieces in precious metals. A variety of techniques and materials have been used to create the 100 pieces of jewellery – from traditional silversmithing methods in precious metals to 3D printing and unconventional techniques, the exhibition will exhibit examples from across the jewellery spectrum.
‘100 Jewels by 100 Women’ was first conceived to be held during Women’s History Month in March and to coincide with Dundee Women’s Festival. When the recent lockdown restrictions came into place at the start of the year, it was decided to move the exhibition to a time when people could visit. Project coordinator ieva jankovska said:
“During this really difficult time for everyone we feel it’s even more important than ever to be able to open our doors and introduce visitors to all these wonderful makers who have come through Dundee. We look forward to bringing together such a diverse display of contemporary jewellery and hope the record of this project will have a lasting positive impact for the Dundee design scene and beyond.”
The exhibition will be open to the public with a limited number of visitors at any one time to ensure physical distancing and provide a safe space to enjoy the exhibition. Entry to the exhibition will be free of charge.
Thanks to the support from Creative Scotland all one hundred pieces of jewellery will be professionally photographed and included in a printed catalogue, providing a legacy of women in craft from Dundee. This will also be made available online allowing access to the show for those who cannot travel.
The exhibition runs from 2-27 June 2021 at Double Door Studios. To view online and for up to date visiting information go to www.100jewels.uk.
