Funding has been identified through Southwark Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer programme to commission an artist / arts organisation to produce a piece of public art near the entrance of the 109 Cossall Walk Sheltered Housing building, SE15 2SU.
109 Cossall Sheltered Housing is a council sheltered housing scheme providing accommodation for elderly and other vulnerable people. The unit was built towards the end of the 1970s and for almost 40 years has been a central part of the estate and neighbourhood. Based in Peckham it is home to residents from a wide variety of backgrounds and all employees consistently encourage the breaking down of barriers between the different cultures of their residents. Being an “age friendly” borough, Southwark always aims to promote wellbeing across all sectors of population including elderly people. Improving their local environment is a way to connect them with their community and make them proud of where they live.
The proposal for commissioning a piece of public art came from the sheltered housing officer of Cossall Walk and is supported by the residents, Cossall TRA and the local John Donne Primary school. Stakeholders hope the artwork will deter littering, dumping and unwanted graffiti as well as improve the aesthetics of the space for those who often use the space for access to the park, the local John Donne Primary school and local train station.
