Lettering artist wanted for project with Ditchling Primary School, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft

The purpose of Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft is to present the story and historical context of the artists and craft workers who lived and worked in Ditchling and its surrounding communities since 1900. This is to be achieved through the acquisition, organisation, presentation and interpretation of relevant and related objects and information and their deployment for public display, research and learning.

The Project

The museum is looking for a lettering artist to run a series of workshops with Ditchling (St Margaret’s) CE Primary School. The aim of the project is to create a permanent installation for the school. The piece should reflect the village’s typographic and lettering history and the schools Christian values: reverence, forgiveness, compassion, trust, thankfulness, koinonia and perseverance. It should also celebrate the written word and letter form as the school has just taken on a new handwriting scheme.

Project Timeframe

  • 7 March PM – interview.
  • April – talk to children for ideas.
  • 25 April PM, 26 April PM, 27 & 28 April all day - a series of 6 workshops at the museum using the museum’s lettering collection as inspiration.
Each workshop will be for a class, and run for 2 hours.
  • 1st week in July – install project art work.
  • 2nd week of July – official opening of project art work.

Following the workshops at the museum, the artist will create a final piece using the student’s creations to be permanently displayed in the school.
