Call for Applications: British Ceramics Biennial’s Award

Prize doubled to £10,000 in celebration of BCB’s 10 anniversary

The British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) announces the call for entries for AWARD, inviting UK-based artists to submit proposals for this £10,000 prize and exhibition. AWARD is the headline exhibition in BCB, which celebrates its 10 anniversary in 2019 and provides a platform for some of the UK’s most talented artists working in clay. The next BCB festival will take place in Stoke-on-Trent from 28 September to 10 November 2019.

Up to 10 artists will be selected for AWARD, each receiving a grant of £500 towards the realisation of their exhibition proposal. To mark the 10 year of the British Ceramics Biennial, the prize money for AWARD has been doubled to £10,000 and will be awarded to one artist during the run of the festival. There will also be an opportunity for the winner to be involved in both selection process for AWARD 2021 and the subsequent BCB 2021 exhibition programme.

The 2019 AWARD judging panel is chaired by Alun Graves, Senior Curator in Ceramics and Glass at the V&A, who is joined by artist, researcher and writer, Clare Twomey; artist and 2017 AWARD winner, Tana West; Director of Craftspace, Deirdre Figuerido; Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, Lilli Geissendorfer and Artistic Director of the British Ceramics Biennial, Barney Hare Duke. They will select a shortlist of artists whose primary medium is clay and whose work is based on the exploration of ceramic process; work submitted must be no more than three years old and it is anticipated that many of the artists will propose to make new work.

The 2017 AWARD artists were Malene Hartmann Rasmussen, Zoe Lloyd, Eva Masterman, Pauliina Pöllänen, Matthew Raw, Nicholas Rena, Alex Simpson, Matt Smith, Katie Spragg and Tana West. The AWARD winner was Tana West for her installation ‘Un(Woven).  She will present a new commission in the 2019 BCB programme.

The last edition of the British Ceramics Biennial festival took place in 2017 and featured over 100 artists and attracted over 60,000 visits, building Stoke-on-Trent’s reputation as an international centre of ceramics excellence.

Application Deadline

The closing date for entries is 6pm on Wednesday 5 December 2018.
