Call for Applications: Love of Travel Exhibition
The Pôle Bijou of the Community of Communes of the Lunéville-to-Baccarat Territory wishes to create a cycle of events related to a famous personality who was born and lived in its territory: Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt.
After the first exhibition in connection with his passion for botany (July to November 2018), this second exhibition will, from February to June 2019, celebrate his immense love of travel.
About Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt
He was born in Lunéville in 1751, the fifth child of Barbe-Françoise Bainville and Nicolas-Charles-Sigisbert Sonnini. His father had abandoned Italy at the very beginning of the 18th century and settled in Lorraine to found « Les liqueurs de Lorraine », entering the service of the dukes, first Leopold, then Stanislas Leczinski (Louis XV’s father-in-law) who ennobled him in 1756.
Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt received a degree of Doctor in philosophy (at the age of 15), then followed a law course in Strasbourg University and became a qualified barrister (at 17). Yet, to the displeasure of his family, he chose to join the Navy at 20 to accomplish his dream: travelling.
In the King’s service, he thus discovered and explored, sometimes in difficult circumstances and extreme conditions, the Guianas, Gorée Island, Cabo Verde, Upper and Lower Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, Greece, Crete…
Purpose of the Call for Appliations
The purpose is to open the exhibition to contemporary creators in Jewelry and Finery, working about these words by Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt:
“Travelling is useful to young people; they always bring back real and solid knowledge, charming memories. The years of my life I devoted to travels were the only ones when I could boast to be happy. For a passionate traveller, and such he must be, labours, fatigues, perils, deprivations are no matter for affliction; he bravely defies them, and even takes pride in overcoming them: his body suffers, to tell the truth, but his ideas widen, his imagination is given a new impetus, his talents are fortified, and if endowed with any faculty, he feels it developing and getting a surplus of activity and energy; amid the agitations of the body, his soul is quiet, and the successes he achieves fill it with the most flattering sensations; the acts of treachery, the gibes of envy, squabbles and deceptions of all kinds, that disgraceful retinue of the raging thirst for gold, all the subjects of sorrow which are so widespread within civilized societies, do not interfere to disturb or tear the soul, even in the most critical situations. The sensitive traveller (pity him who is not!) often encounters sweet entertainments or touching scenes, which give him compensation for the dangers and the misery to which he is exposed”.
That deep love of travelling and travels can be approached from many perspectives (vehicles of the travel – boats, balloons…; objects of the travel – sextant, maps and atlases…; travel books and memories, imaginary travels…).
