Bishopsland Educational Trust has amassed an extensive collection of over 3,000 hand tools and machinery generously donated by retired silversmiths or as a legacy gifted by their families.

As a result of these gifts, we have created the ‘Tools Library’ initiative under the auspices of the Bishopsland charity. The Tools Library will protect, preserve and pass on hand tools for future generations – to collect, curate and care for them.

The intention is that acquired tools will be photographed, inventoried, 3D scanned with digital patterns, and categorised into skill set and use type. Short videos will be created showing tools being used

so craftspeople accessing the Library to provide a visual resource demonstrating correct use and maintenance.

Donor details will be captured alongside historical facts and information related to tools / collections.

Our aim is for these tools to serve as a foundational resource for the next generation of makers. The protection and preservation of craft skills is a critical issue facing our sector. Hand, technical, vocational and craft skills all use tools and making techniques that are endangered. Bishopsland believe that this initiative will provide an exciting digital training resource and physical tools library that will support the UK craft sector and underpin training for future generations.

Tools from the library will be curated, cared for and collected with some being loaned, gifted (tool set up packs) or sold back to training, incubation or workspace environments, dependent on rarity, speciality or duplication.

Currently this collection of tools is in storage and Bishopsland is applying for funding to operationalise this incredible resource.

You can help the charitable Tools Library by completing this very short questionnaire (average time to complete is 3 minutes) which will help us assess the demand for tools and set up the lending / gifting facility appropriately.

Thank you in advance for your help and support of this new initiative.
